On Europe Day this year, for the first time ever, young people from the region, Young European Ambassadors and the EU ambassadors to the Western Balkan countries got together in an online event. The theme of the debate was how young people from the region can connect even better with the European Union, and the participants approached it with passion and enthusiasm.

Young people from the Western Balkans should be able to make decisions about their own future. To do so they need to meet with their peers across Europe, learn from each other, exchange ideas on how to create a greener, prosperous and more equal world for everybody. They want to experience life in the EU on the spot and share best practices in their communities. They need more support from the EU to develop their education systems so that schools provide the skills and knowledge needed to address the challenges of today. The same goes for the capacity for research. Above all the experience of partnerships with students across the EU should be available to students not just in capitals and from those best able to access education but throughout the countries of the Western Balkans including rural and marginalised communities.

These are some of the aspirations and ideas that 24 high school students from the region, together with the 12 Young European Ambassadors, presented in the debate to the EU ambassadors to the Western Balkan countries on 9 May. These teenagers, already proven drivers of positive change in their societies, had a unique opportunity to exchange views at this level, initiated by the EU Delegation to North Macedonia.

The EU is already connected with the Western Balkans through numerous EU-funded projects, but, as students mentioned, there is a need to involve more young people, especially from rural areas and marginalised groups. The Bosnian students raised the issue of the European Youth Goals https://europa.eu/youth/strategy/european-youth-goals_en becoming part of the school curricula. A student from Albania proposed that there should be more competitions with awards such as study trips to the EU in order to motivate young people to learn more about the Union. Most of the participants were aware of the role of the Young European Ambassadors (to present European values and bring the EU idea closer to the citizens), but agreed that it should be further promoted.

In most countries in the region, there are laws on youth engagement, but their implementation remains an issue, said the participants. Those from North Macedonia said that youth centres were being set up, which is a step forward in youth empowerment. But they are aware that change cannot happen out of the blue and that the involvement of young people is necessary to make a real difference.

The event was an opportunity also for the EU ambassadors to BiH, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia to speak about what the EU meant for them personally. Some of those coming from Western European countries, recalled that they were born into a post-war generation which had grown up committed to the peace-making mission of the European Union and the principle that “Never Again” should the continent be split by conflict. Some others talked about the experience of growing up and witnessing the development of freedom of movement, the removal of borders, the creation of a single market and the many benefits that flowed from that. Other who hailed from Central  European countries underlined the huge impact the fall of the iron curtain and the unification of Europe had had on their lives in terms of individual freedoms. All highlighted the power of the European Union to connect people across the European continent as one of its major assets. As Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the EU, once said: “we are not forming coalitions between States, but union among people”.

The ambassadors welcomed the energy and determination of the participants encouraging them to be even more demanding: among their peers, in their own countries and towards the EU. They also urged them to use the opportunities under Erasmus + as much as possible, and to work towards achieving the priorities of the European Green Deal. Ambassador David Geer said that the Delegation to North Macedonia was reaching out to young people at local level, especially via the three Europe Houses. ‘The EU will continue creating opportunities for the youth, but we need young people to work with us and to engage with other stakeholders in society’, said the Ambassador. He then praised the efforts of youth activists recalling the words of one participating student Blendi Hodai who had explained his commitment to activism quite simply “because I don’t want to be part of a generation that just complains”.

Наградата „Жан Моне“ ќе биде доделена во 3 натпреварувачки категории:

1. Најдобра новинарска сторија (за стории објавени во печатени медиуми, телевизија, радио и/или на интернет);
2. Најдобра репортерска фотографија (за фотографии објавени во печатени медиуми и/или на интернет);
3. Најдобра аматерска фотографија.

1. Конкурс за најдобра новинарска сторија

Во оваа категорија може да учествуваат стории коишто се однесуваат на темата „Солидарноста на Европската Унија за време на пандемија – очекувања и можности”, а чиишто автори се новинари од државата. Сториите треба да бидат објавени во домашни весници, списанија, телевизии, радио или на веб-страници, во периодот меѓу 1 јануари 2020 и 31 декември 2020 година.

Сториите треба да ги исполнуваат следниве критериуми:

• Да се однесуваат на темата „Солидарноста на Европската Унија за време на пандемија – очекувања и можности”;
• Да се објавени во периодот меѓу 1 јануари 2020 и 31 декември 2020 година;
• Да се потпишани со вистинското име на авторот.

Копии од новинарските стории во дигитален ПДФ формат (видео фајл за ТВ и радио), заедно со изјава во писмена форма, потпишана од авторот, со која гарантира дека таа/тој е автор на сторијата, треба да се испратат на следнава електронска адреса: JMcompetition@europehouse.mk, најдоцна до 21 април 2021 година, до 18.00 часот. The Delegation of the European Union and the Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers announce the 18^th edition of the Jean Monnet Media Award for best achievements in covering issues related to the theme of “EU solidarity during the pandemic: expectations and possibilities”.

The Jean Monnet Award will be given in 3 competition categories:

1. Best Journalistic News Item (for news items published in print media, broadcast media and/or web);
2. Best Reporters’ Photography (for photographs published in print media and/or web);
3. Best Amateurs’ Photography.
4. Best Journalistic News Item Competition

The participating works in this category are national authors’ news items on “EU solidarity during the pandemic: expectations and possibilities” subject, published in national newspapers, magazines, broadcast media and websites in the period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020.

The news item/s should fulfil the following criteria:

• The news item is on the theme: “EU solidarity during the pandemic: expectations and possibilities”;
• The news item is published in the period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020;
• The news item is signed by the author’s real name.

Copies of the news item in digital PDF format, together with a written and signed statement by the author, guaranteeing that s/he is the author of the item need to be sent at the following e-mail address: JMcompetition@europehouse.mk, by 11 April 2021, at 18:00 the latest. Applicants will receive an e-mail receipt confirmation by the Europe House. 

Award: statuette, certificate and a voucher for a technical equipment in an amount of EUR 1,000.

2. Best Reporters’ Photography Competition (for photographs published in print media and/or web)

The competition is open for all professional photojournalists and photographers from the country, who can submit up to 3 photographs on a “EU solidarity during the pandemic: expectations and possibilities” subject, published in the period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020.

The photographs eligible for the competition must fulfil the following criteria:

• The theme of the photography is related to the theme: “EU solidarity during the pandemic: expectations and possibilities”;
• The photography is published in the period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020;
• Photographs used for commercial purposes are not eligible for the competition.

Copies of the photography/photographs in digital format (size of each photography 3-5 MB), together with a written and signed statement by the author, guaranteeing that s/he is the author of the photography as well as that he/she is professional photographer, need to be sent, to the following e-mail JMcompetition@europehouse.mk , latest by 11 April 2021, at 18:00. The applicants will receive an e-mail receipt confirmation by the Europe House.

Award: statuette, certificate and a voucher for a technical equipment in an amount of EUR 1,000.

3. Best Amateurs’ Photography Competition

The competition is open for all photographers from the country, who can submit one photograph on a “Community – that is us” subject. The photographs competing in this category may, but do not need to be previously published.

The photographs eligible for the competition must fulfil the following criteria:

• The theme of the photography is related to “Community – that is us” subject;
• Photographs used for commercial purposes are not eligible for the competition.

The contestants of this category should submit their applications on the following e-mail address JMcompetition@europehouse.mk, latest by 11 April 2021, at 18:00. Each competitor can submit 1 (one) photograph (size of the photography 3-5 MB) and should guarantee that s/he is the author of the photography by sending a signed statement to the same e-mail address. The applicants will receive an e-mail receipt confirmation by the Europe House.

Award: Certificate and voucher for a technical equipment in an amount of EUR 500.

Note: This activity is organized in partnership with the Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers. The Delegation of the European Union shall not be held responsible for any legal liability arising from any disputes over the copy or author rights, which shall be solely the responsibility of the applicant. The Delegation of the European Union reserves the right to cancel the qualification of the disputed entry and recover any award and prize granted. The activity can in no way be taken to reflect the views of the European Union.

A five-member jury committee will choose the winners.

The awarding ceremony will be held on  April 28, 2021.

Konkursi për çmimin “Zhan Mone” 2020

Delegacioni i Bashkimit Evropian dhe Sindikata e Pavarur e Gazetarëve dhe Punonjësve Mediatik shpallin edicionin e 18-të të konkursit për çmimin “Zhan Mone”, për arritje më të mira në raportimin për çështje lidhur me temën “Solidariteti i BE-së gjatë pandemisë:pritjet dhe mundësitë”.

Çmimi “Zhan Mone” do të ndahet në 3 kategori garuese:

1. Storja më e mirë gazetareske (për storje të publikuara në mediat e shtypura, televizionet, radiot dhe/ose në internet);
2. Fotografi më e mirë e fotoreporterit (për fotografi të publikuara në mediat e shtypura dhe/ose në internet);
3. Fotografi amatore më e mirë.
4. Konkurs për storje më të mirë gazetareske (lajm)

Në këtë kategori mund të marrin pjesë storjet që kanë të bëjnë me temën “Solidariteti i BE-së gjatë pandemisë – pritjet dhe mundësitë”, dhe autorët e të cilave janë gazetarë nga vendi. Storjet duhet të jenë të botuara në gazeta, revista, televizione, radio ose në uebfaqe, në periudhën nga 1 janari 2020 deri më 31 dhjetor 2020.

Storjet duhet t’i plotësojnë kriteret në vazhdim:

• Të kanë të bëjnë me temën “Solidariteti i BE-së gjatë pandemisë – pritjet dhe mundësitë”;
• Të jenë të botuara në periudhën ndërmjet 1 janarit 2020 dhe 31 dhjetor 2020;
• Të jenë të nënshkruara me emrin e vërtetë të autorit.

Kopjet nga storja gazetareske në formatin PDF, bashkë me deklaratën në formë të shkruar, të nënshkruar nga autori, me të cilën garantohet që ai/ajo është autor/autore e storjes, duhet të dërgohen në adresën elektronike në vazhdim: JMcompetition@europehouse.mk, më së voni deri më 11 prill 2021, deri në ora 18:00. Secili prej kandidatëve do të pranojë vërtetim pranimi me postë elektronike nga Europe House Shkup.

The Place of the New Generation

Inspired by the positive experiences at Europe House Skopje, the Delegation of the EU in North Macedonia, in partnership with the municipalities, opened 2 new Europe House’s in Kriva Palanka and Strumica. The centers will operate in the same spirit but with the emphasis on the local demands. All these efforts aim towards a mutual goal – strengthening of the voice of the youth in the society, and towards encouraging them to play a greater role in identifying and addressing challenges.
