COFFEE WITH AMBASSADORS – DIALOGUE ON IDENTITY, CULTURE AND EUROPE

On April 28, 2026, the event “Coffee with Ambassadors” took place at Europe House Bitola. The event is part of a series of moderated debates organized across the Europe House network, aimed at fostering open and meaningful dialogue between ambassadors from European Union member states and citizens.

In a welcoming and open atmosphere, the debate brought together representatives of Austria and Poland in an interactive discussion on the topic “Human Rights, Culture, Diversity and Identity.” The discussion featured the Ambassador of Austria, Martin Pammer, and the Deputy Head of Mission of the Republic of Poland, Anna Kasprzak, who through their experiences and perspectives made an important contribution to understanding these key social issues, while bringing the complexity of these topics closer to the audience with sincerity and openness.

In the segment dedicated to human rights, it was emphasized that both Austria and Poland have complex historical experiences with diverse minority communities, but European Union membership has significantly contributed to increasing their visibility. Austria was highlighted as an example of an institutionalized approach, with constitutionally recognized national minorities, allowing concrete and everyday protection of their rights, language, and cultural identity. Poland, on the other hand, has gone through a process of re-recognizing and embracing minority identities, while the European framework has contributed to greater inclusiveness.

The discussion also addressed migration and new forms of diversity, while in the segment on identity it was stressed that the historical paths of both countries have strongly influenced how citizens perceive their national and European identity. It was underlined that among younger generations there is increasingly a sense of dual belonging, both national and European, which is not seen as a contradiction but as an advantage in the contemporary world.

Culture and cultural exchange were recognized as key drivers of European connectedness. Both countries have used their rich cultural traditions and contemporary artistic scenes to build a strong international presence, while EU membership has enabled greater mobility, visibility, and cooperation. Austria has successfully balanced preserving its cultural heritage with supporting contemporary and alternative cultural expressions, while Poland, through investments in cultural diplomacy, film, literature and design, has significantly expanded its global influence.

The discussion also opened the issue of brain drain and cultural erosion. Participants pointed out that freedom of movement in the EU, while bringing numerous benefits, also presents challenges, particularly for smaller or economically weaker countries. Regarding European values, it was emphasized that they are not limited to institutions and policies, but are reflected in everyday life, in decision-making, attitudes toward others, and the functioning of society as a whole.

The event concluded with messages focused on the European future of our country. The speakers shared sincere and encouraging messages, stressing that the process of European integration brings real and tangible benefits for citizens, especially in the areas of identity, diversity, culture and mobility, and that these changes are among the most meaningful for everyday life.

This initiative brings together diverse national experiences, where progress is based on cooperation, stability and knowledge exchange. Events like this create space for sharing practical experiences from EU member states, their path and experience within the Union, as well as their cooperation and support in our country.
